The Spark

On October 5th, a young man who has never been baptized made the courageous commitment to become a catechumen at our church.
An overwhelming amount of community members were curious as to what this meant and how he would be preparing for baptism.
Crossing the generational lines, the comments were: "I would like to learn more about my faith also", “I never fully understood the “why”, and “It’s been a while since I’ve seen this material”.  From this desire, the Grace of the Holy Spirit brought the conception of this program.

Who can be a part of this?

Anyone and everyone. Those who want to grow in their life in Christ as an Orthodox Christian, those who are seeking or inquiring about the 2000 year life of Orthodox Christianity, and anyone who feels drawn to answer this invitation.
Recent polls show that Generation Z (people born between 1997 – 2012) have become the largest church attendees and those seeking a True Worshipping Community.

Is there a set program?

Yes. The first part will be about the Life Giving gift of Jesus Christ as passed on in the 2000 year witness of Orthodox Christianity. The second part will be about living that life through our worship and spirituality. For the first part we will be using the book “The Faith” by Clark Carlton (Amazon link, Scribd link). We will also refer to Fr. Tom Hopko’s series on The Orthodox Faith, available online here.

Why use a book from 1997?

Good question. One reason is the format that follows a classic dogmatics class. The book is structured in small chapters with a practical study at the end of each one. There are questions to reflect on the chapter. It lends itself to group participation and personal study.

What is the commitment?

That is up to you, do what you can. Attend all or what you are able. No exams. No one will be “put on the spot”. The goal is growing our relationship with God as lived and handed down in the Orthodox Faith since the time of the apostles.
